Last Consulate is the solo project of one multi-instrumentalist, built on upright bass, electric bass, guitar and downtempo electronics.

The improvising is jazz. The production is early-2000s downtempo electronica, the slow and hazy end of it, instrumental and warm, and mixed so that what was played and what was sampled are hard to tell apart.

Upright bass is the lead instrument. Under it sit slow hip-hop drums, extended jazz harmony, tape-worn keys and delayed guitars, and the improvised bass line is usually the melody.

It is built for arrival, cocktails and dinner, played at a volume guests can talk across, with the feel of a late jazz set or a hotel lobby. The loops hold the tempo in the slow band all evening, so the music never drifts up as the venue fills, and the bass lines are played fresh on the night rather than off a record.
