As the doors open: The duo, upright bass and guitar, plays the standards while guests find their names and their people. You can tell the music is live from across the venue, and it stays under the first hour of conversation.

The remarks and the awards: Silence, on cue. The band plays up to the moment and stops while your speaker is still steps from the microphone, and a walk-up for each award is planned on the run of show.
After the program: The quartet, the trio plus a horn or a singer out front, plays the swing and the soul end of the songbook for the hour the dance floor opens. When the night should run past that, the DJ or a covers band carries the after-party through the same sound system, on the same contract.
