The open house: Neighbors, family and the people from work drifting in and out over an afternoon and an evening, so there are twelve people in the house at one point and sixty at another. The music has to work at both, which is why this is a solo or a duo playing the season with the standards threaded through, so the people who stay the whole time don’t hear the same carols twice. It sits in the corner the party naturally faces and never gets louder than the conversation around it.
The seated dinner: One long table, or a few of them, and the meal is the point of the night.
