There are three, and the second and third are what make an Aspen date different from a Denver one.
- The fee for the music
- The fee covers the band, sound support that’s the right size for the venue, setup, the sound check, strike and a personal contact for the night. A duo through cocktails and dinner or a quartet when the dance floor is the point, whichever the evening needs.
- Travel
- Travel is priced with the date. Aspen is roughly four hours from Denver each way in good conditions, over passes that don’t always give you good conditions, and that’s most of a working day at both ends of the evening.
- Lodging, at cost
- A band that has played a late set isn’t driving four hours of mountain highway home that night. Lodging is billed at cost. That’s the difference between a far resort and the I-70 towns, which mostly don’t need it.
- Why it’s itemized
- A retreat budget goes through finance, and a quote that separates fee, travel and lodging is easier to forward, question and approve.

The Little Nell at the base of Aspen Mountain and the Hotel Jerome in the town's core anchor the dinner calendar, The St. Regis Aspen carries the ballroom end of it, and Aspen Meadows is the campus a working offsite actually runs on, sessions by day and dinner on the property at night. The Limelight holds the more casual end of the market, welcome nights and closing parties.
Where the retreat wants one act across the whole evening, Tejas Singh can start as a duo and finish as a quartet on the same contract. Where it wants dinner music and no more, a jazz duo of upright bass and guitar holds the evening at a volume the table talks across.

The evenings here happen on dining floors and terraces built at human scale, and dinner asks for a duo or a trio at the level a table of executives talks across without effort. A quartet is the booking when you want people dancing.

At 7,908 feet the altitude is gentler than Vail’s and well under Breckenridge’s, and we still plan a longer sound check for it.

- Can the party run outdoors in Aspen?
- Yes, until eight in the evening. Outdoor amplified sound at a private event was capped at 80 dBA at the perimeter, between 9am and 8pm, when we checked, with neighbors within 250 feet owed seven days' notice. - What do Aspen venues need from the band?
- Venues at this level hold vendors to their standards: a certificate of insurance, setup on the venue's schedule, and the sound cap and curfew kept as written.
- How much space and power does it need?
- A duo takes a corner of about 8 by 6 feet and one dedicated 20-amp circuit; a quartet takes about 14 by 10 feet and two. Setup runs 45 to 90 minutes depending on size, and the drive's margin is built into the setup day.
